Evaluation tools in SOLIDWORKS allow users to calculate specific properties of the models. However, they are some steps to follow to ensure accurate results.
In this example, we will calculate the volume of a container.
First, we need to close the container.
Sketch, extrude and merge a lid on top of the container.
Hint : Use Convert Entities to ensure proper sketch.
Once complete, sketch a box covering the container.
Extrude the sketch to solid body, ensuring that the shape will cover the whole container. Do NOT merge the result.
Use Combine function to separate the body. Set the operation to Subtract.
Select the box as Main Body, and container as Bodies to Combine.
Press green check mark, and select ” Selected bodies “. Select Body 2 check box to keep as result.
This will become the negative space of the container.
The result will be complete solid. Using Mass Properties tools in Evaluation tab, Volume is calculated.
