When assembling components in SOLIDWORKS, understanding how to fix and float components is essential for controlling their movement within the assembly.
1. Fixed vs. Floating Components
- First Component: The first part inserted into an assembly is automatically fixed (f) in place. This means it cannot move unless its status is changed.
- Subsequent Components: Additional parts are not fixed by default and require mates to define their position relative to other components.
2. Fixing a Component
To fix a component manually:
- Right-click on the component in the graphics area or the FeatureManager Design Tree.
- Select Fix to lock its position.
3. Floating a Fixed Component
If a fixed component needs to move:
- Right-click on the component.
- Select Float to allow movement.
- Apply mates to control its motion as needed.
